Bronco & 19th Street Pedestrian Bridge Rehabs and Guardrail Repairs

Project Overview

The Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI), in collaboration with Concrete Express Inc, will rehabilitate two pedestrian bridges (Bronco and 19th Street) along the South Platte River Trail. This rehabilitation work will extend the service life of the bridges and is funded through the Bridge Maintenance Program.

The project will first rehabilitate the pedestrian bridge connecting Empower Field at Mile High to 1st Street, used to access the RTD Light Rail Station at Empower Field at Mile High. Work will include removal and replacement of expansion joints, concrete deck repairs, minor concrete repairs, bollard installation, and bridge painting.

Secondly, the project will rehabilitate the pedestrian bridge just south of 19th Street near Commons Park and Denver Skatepark. This work will include bridge joint replacement, concrete deck repairs, concrete pavement repairs, deck drain replacement, pedestrian railing repairs, bollards, removal of the timber walkway, spot painting, and an anchorage system under the bridge.

Bridge maintenance work will be completed in phases to allow part of the bridge to remain open to pedestrian traffic during construction. Signs and construction devices will be in place to alert pedestrians of the work.

The project team will also repair various sections of impacted guardrail around the City: E 6th Avenue on-ramp from Raritan Way, Northfield Boulevard over Spruce Way, 54th Avenue and Tower Road in Green Valley Ranch and on Santa Fe Drive near Sanderson Gulch over the South Platte River.

Operations and Impacts

Pedestrian bridge work will require the following travel impacts:

  • Bronco Pedestrian Bridge is currently partially closed. The northern half of the bridge is closed, access over the bridge is currently maintained, although restricted to 15' width. See map below.
  • 19th Street Pedestrian Bridge will be partially and fully closed to support reconstruction operations. A short detour will be proved when a full closure is required.
  • Normal working hours will be from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and on weekends when necessary. This timeline is dependent on weather and resource availability and is subject to change.

Guardrail repair work will require the following travel impacts:

  • Guardrail on the E 6th Avenue on-ramp from Raritan Way will require a weekend full closure of the on-ramp this summer.
  • Driving speeds will be reduced within the work zone. Please slow down, watch for workers and equipment, and leave plenty of space between vehicles.
  • Normal working hours will be from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and on weekends when necessary. This timeline is dependent on weather and resource availability and is subject to change.
