Family Preparedness

  • Parents can make alternative caregiver arrangements for their children for unexpected or emergency situations. An alternative caregiver should be a responsible and trusted adult who is known to you and your children, and who has agreed to accept responsibility for the care of your children.  The alternative caregiver should be familiar with your child and their needs, including how to address any medical issues.
  • Ensure that your children’s school has accurate emergency contact information, that includes alternative caregivers who you authorize to release your children to if you are unavailable.
  • Have discussions with your children about the steps you have taken to prepare your family for an emergency situation, so they know what to expect.
  • If you are a parent or legal guardian and have been separated from your child, and you believe they are in the temporary care of the Department of Human Services, contact the Colorado Child Abuse and Neglect Hotline at 844-CO-4-KIDS.
