Enhancing the Legacy of Lookout Mountain Park and the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave

Pahaska at Lookout Mountain Park will reopen in phases beginning in summer 2026, with retail operations expected to open in June 2026. Food and beverage service will follow later in the summer as operational improvements continue.

The reopening of the historic Pahaska building reflects ongoing efforts by Denver Parks and Recreation to preserve and reimagine this landmark within the broader context of Lookout Mountain Park and the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave.

Originally constructed in 1921 as part of the museum and visitor experience on Lookout Mountain, the Pahaska building has long served as a place where visitors explore the history, landscapes, and evolving stories of the American West.

When the retail store reopens in June 2026, visitors will once again be able to explore a curated selection of books, gifts, and regional goods that reflect the history, cultures, and perspectives connected to the site and the surrounding region. Later in the summer, Native American-focused food and beverage service will begin, continuing the Lookout Mountain experience with a focus on regional and culturally informed services.

Project Background

Lookout Mountain Park, home to the popular Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave, is visited by more than 500,000 people per year and holds immense historical significance with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes. As part of an ongoing effort to enrich the visitor experience to Lookout Mountain Park, Denver Parks and Recreation remains committed to preserving the park's natural beauty, protecting its historic buildings, and honoring its historical significance.

Pahaska Tepee, the gift shop and café located next to the Buffalo Bill Museum, closed temporarily at the end of 2024 to facilitate operational changes, reduce loads impacting the building’s mechanical systems, and provide access for historic preservation efforts.

The adjacent Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave continues to remain open to visitors and to operate as usual. The museum is considered a top cultural destination in Denver and receives up to 80K visitors per year. The museum will continue to operate seven days a week from 9 am to 5 pm in the summer, and 10 am to 5 pm Tuesday through Sunday in the winter.
