Oct. 29, 2025:
Following the difficult decision to remove the American Elm in the playground, neighbors requested a tree health analysis from a third-party prior to its removal and are in the process of securing that service. This is in addition to the analysis already done by the City Forester, which determined the poor health of the tree. In order to ensure the safety of all park visitors, the playground is closed as of 10/29/2025 and will remain closed until the tree is removed. The rest of the park will remain open to enjoy. DPR is exploring if any portion of the tree can safely be part of the final design of the playground. A public meeting is tentatively planned for early December where neighbors can review and provide feedback on the final design.
Sept. 16, 2025:
The difficult decision has been made to remove the American Elm in the playground at Montclair Park. Tree removal is always a last resort for any tree and especially notable trees such as this. Due to public safety concerns and the inherent risk that this tree poses to the park users, it is in the best interest to remove the tree. Tree removal is expected to occur at the end of the month. Additional trees will be planted in Montclair Park, following completion of the playground improvement project, to add additional shade in the park where appropriate.
Plans are in place to repurpose the trunk of this tree for a wood carving that will be a major feature of the new playground, which will start construction in spring 2026. Park users will be able to see the history and still be a part of this tree’s legacy moving forward.
