Autopsies are performed at the discretion of the Medical Examiner. If an autopsy is performed, it can take up to 18 weeks to complete the report. You may request a copy of the report by filling out the information, below, and submitting to the Denver office of the Medical Examiner.
There is no charge for digital copies of reports sent directly through email. Hard copies and multiple copies of reports are $12 each, payable only by check or money order made out to Manager of Finance. We do not accept cash or credit cards.
Please note: autopsy, chart review, and external examination reports (with the exception of reports prepared in connection with the death of a minor) are open record per the Colorado Open Records Act C.R.S. 24-72-204.

Autopsy reports for minors are only releasable in certain circumstances. If you are a parent or legal guardian of the juvenile decedent, or a city or state agency working within the capacity of your job, or a healthcare facility, healthcare provider or community clinic, please contact our office during normal business hours at 720-337-7600, option #3. If you are requesting the report as a party to a civil case or as defense counsel, a court order will be required.
For all other requestors, please submit a Colorado Open Records Act (CORA) request to receive the limited information releasable under the new statute.
