Denver Animal Shelter Offers a Gift of Reduced Fees for Homeless Pets

Published on December 03, 2024

The homeless dogs and cats at Denver Animal Shelter (DAS) have made a singular wish—they all want a home for the holidays. So, DAS is helping to make that wish come true by reducing adoption fees by up to two-thirds. All dogs and cats over 1 year old are just $50 through Dec. 31. Regular dog adoption fees are $150, cat adoption fees are $95.

The adoption fee includes spay-neuter surgery, vaccinations, a microchip and a one-year pet license.

Thinking of giving a pet as a gift this holiday season? Make sure to check your list twice. Only give a pet as a gift if the recipient is prepared for the responsibility, commitment and time it takes to care for an animal. This includes children and adults.

Consider these things before gifting a pet:

·Prepare the recipient so it’s not a surprise. Consider letting them pick out their own pet.

·Be aware of their lifestyle and schedule to make sure they have the time to care for an animal.

·Adopt the pet from a shelter, a rescue or reputable breeder.

"Pets require a lot of responsibility and will be with the family for 10 years or more. It's not realistic to think kids can take care of a puppy or kitten. They will always need help from their parents," said Melanie Sobel, Director at Denver Animal Shelter. "Plus, quality food and medical care for pets can be expensive. Pets may need training and absolutely need socialization. It is a big commitment, but as most pet owners will tell you, bringing a pet into the family is worth it for the unconditional love and devotion they give you.”

Unfortunately, without the proper preparation, after the glow of the holidays fade, the reality of the commitment of pet ownership can lead to people abandoning pets or giving them to shelters. This is traumatic for the pet and adds additional stressors to shelters, which are often already full.

If committing to a new pet is too much, DAS offers many volunteer opportunities. DAS can use your help taking care of homeless animals through donations. You could even donate in someone’s name as a very special holiday gift.

Today, Tuesday, Dec. 3, your gift DOUBLES thanks to a $20,000 Giving Tuesday match.

Donations on Giving Tuesday allow the shelter to continue providing emergency medical services, foster care, and loving homes for Denver’s most vulnerable animals.
