Current District Rollouts

DOTI is expanding compost collection service to SWC District 5. That includes Athmar Park, Auraria, Baker, Barnum, Barnum West, Civic Center, Lincoln Park, Sun Valley, Union Station, Valverde, Villa Park, Westwood, and parts of the Central Business District and West Colfax neighborhoods.

Compost collection is simple - put food scraps and yard trimmings in your new compost cart! You can also use small approved compostable bags. Compost is collected weekly along with your trash and recycling carts, so it's easy to keep carts clean while reducing the amount of trash going to the landfill.

Here's essential information to receive and put your new compost cart to use:

Not sure if you received the SWM District Rollout Letter?

Compost service is currently rolling out in Solid Waste Collection District 5. Check your district map here.

How do I get my compost cart?

Let us know what you want! For service to begin, you must indicate if you would like a 65 or 95-gallon compost cart. You can do so by:

Logging onto your Denver Utilities Online account:

1. Select “Manage My Cart”
      a. Completing and mailing back the form enclosed with the letter
      b. Calling 311
      c. Select your address from the drop down
2. Request Options: Cart Service – Compost Cart Selection
3. Select your preferred cart size from the drop downs

Cart selections must be received by June 14th for priority delivery.  Cart slections made after that date will be delivered on a rolling basis after we complete the initial requests.

Solid Waste will not deliver a cart until we receive your cart selections. The size of the compost cart you choose does not change the invoice amount as that is tied only to the size of your trash cart. Declining compost service does not change the invoice amount.

When will I receive my cart?

We will deliver green compost carts to your neighborhood through June and July to all residents who indicate their cart size by June 14th.

When does service start?

Right away! You can start setting your compost cart out for collection the week following delivery. Compost is collected on the same day as trash and recycling and should be set out with your recycling.

How do I know what to put (and not put) in my cart?

Food scraps and yard trimmings! You will receive a compost guide with your new cart that tells you what you can compost. You can also visit Denvergov.org/Compost or download the Denver Trash and Recycling App to learn more. Additionally, our drivers and inspectors will be checking carts for contamination (items that can’t be composted). Note that if contamination is found, the cart will not be collected, and carts that are being misused may be subject to removal.

What happens to the “Phased Service Rollout Credit” on my invoice?

We will remove the credit from your next invoice after your cart is delivered and compost service begins in your neighborhood, even if you elect not to use the service. If you need help paying your bill, we encourage you to apply for financial assisstance at Denvergov.org/Expandedcollection, calling (720) 944-3350, or emailing trashrebate@denvergov.org.

How do I request a new trash cart?

As you begin using your new compost cart, you’ll notice your trash going down! Go to Denvergov.org/Utilitiesonline to request a new cart.
