Geographic Information Systems

Organized as a multi-departmental collaborative, geospatialDENVER is the City and County of Denver’s geospatial program.  It is made up of the hardware, software, and staff that keep the city’s Geographic Information Systems (GIS) functioning effectively.  Members are united by the shared goal of improving the efficiency and effectiveness of city operations by leveraging new and existing technology to reduce workload and deliver results.  GIS software allows for comparisons and analyses not possible with traditional, non-spatial databases and provides a platform for interagency collaboration, streamlining workflows, and strategic resource alignment.


What We Do

Technicians, analysts, programmers and database administrators work in departments throughout the city to manage hundreds of data sets, produce maps and posters, conduct analyses that support operations and planning, and provide the public with access to powerful mapping tools.  Products and services include:

Geospatial Data & the Open Data Catalog

Denver's Open Data Catalog went live in July of 2012 to provide easy access to the City's geospatial data and to promote government transparency.  Now, citizens anywhere can download over two hundred data layers in spatial and non-spatial data formats.  Data formats include Shapefile, Esri File Geodatabase, AutoCAD DWG, Comma-Separated Values (CSV), Keyhole Markup Language (KML), and Metadata in XML format.  These data are viewable in a variety of software, including Esri ArcGIS, Google Earth, Google Maps, and Microsoft Excel.  You are free to copy, distribute, transmit and adapt the data in this catalog under an open license, the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license (CC BY 3.0).  Please visit the Open Data Catalog for more information.

Denver Maps

Denver Maps are a collection of customized public facing maps that provide information commonly requested by citizens, businesses, or others.  They are designed to answer your questions quickly and easily for any given location within the City and County of Denver.  Maps inform Zoning, Property Records, Parks and Recreation opportunities, Neighborhoods, Crime, and more.  These maps are embedded throughout the City's website for ease of discovery and use.  Please visit the main Denver Maps page to begin using the map applications.

Aerial Imagery

The City and County of Denver has an extensive collection of aerial imagery for use in its Geographic Information Systems.  The City obtained its first high-resolution aerials in the year 2000 and has collected them every two years since. In 2006, the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) initiated a regional collection effort, known as the Denver Regional Aerial Photography Project, or the DRAPP.  The DRAPP allows for various municipalities, as well as other government and quasi-government agencies, to contribute to the cost of a regional aerial imagery acquisition, allowing for a higher quality product at a lower cost.  

Denver's Open Data Catalog contains the following imagery:  Black and white tiles for 1933, 1995, and 2000, and color imagery for 2004, 2006, and 2008.  DRAPP imagery was collected in 2010, 2012, and 2014. However, with a 3" inch resolution, the size of the files have proven a challenge to serve via the ODC. 2014 and past DRAPP imagery are available for purchase from MapMart, Inc.  For more information on the DRAPP, please visit the DRCOG website at drcog.org.

  1. Download and complete the Custom Map Request Form Include a concise description of the study area and layers to be displayed on the map.
  2. Include any maps or supporting documentation that will help with the creation of the custom map.
  3. Email the completed form and all supporting documentation to denvergis@denvergov.org

  1. Download and complete the GIS Data Request Form(PDF, 54KB).
  2. Email the completed form to denvergis@denvergov.org

How to Order Assessment Database Information

Assessment Database Information can be ordered in person, email or by fax.  The fee for a Custom Database Query is $55.00 per hour.

Payment by Credit Card is available. Complete the Credit Card Authorization Form(PDF, 50KB); then email the completed form to assessor@denvergov.org

Ordering Assessment Database Information by email or fax

  1. Complete the Assessment Custom Report Request Form(PDF, 127KB).
  2. Include a concise description of the information needed.
  3. Include any supporting documentation that will help with the creation of the information.
  4. Email completed form and all supporting documentation to assessor@denvergov.org; or FAX to 720-913-4101. Call 720-913-1311 within 24 hours to insure the fax was received. Ask to be transferred to Assessment.
