Equipment Operator 1

Operates light to medium sized industrial equipment in the performance of a variety of construction, maintenance, and other work in combination with assigned vehicle's operation or mode of function and performs light to heavy physical labor.

Medium weight equipment (double axle)

700 hours EO 1 differential, one year at the SUW or EO 1 level, one year servicing equipment at EO 1 level, or two years as UW

Possession of a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements and air brake endorsement

Examples of equipment include: aerial extensions under 35 feet, rear end loaders, tandem axle and single axle dump trucks, light sweepers, tractors and tractor mowers.

Possession of a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements and air brake endorsement. (Some positions may require a Class A Commercial Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements and air brake endorsement.)

Examples of equipment include: front-end loaders, motor graders, bulldozers, skid steers, cranes under a 40-ton capacity, asphalt paving equipment and tarmac snow removal equipment.

Your qualifications and experience will be reviewed and if you are selected to test, you will be contacted by the department/agency to schedule a test session.

Applicants will perform a full pre-trip inspection at the beginning of the test according to Colorado CDL standards. For a copy of the most up-to-date Colorado CDL Handbook please go to the Colorado Department of Transportation website.

Testing can take up to one hour and thirty minutes. Some departments will also conduct interviews on the same day which can take an additional 20-45 minutes. Applicants will be notified prior to testing if interviews will be conducted on the same day.

If you are selected to test you will receive an email with testing information, including what to bring. Please read this email carefully as the requirements are different for each performance test. All equipment operators (EO 1, EO 2, and EO 3) must bring a valid CDL with appropriate endorsement and valid DOT Medical Card. Without this documentation, you will not be able to operate the equipment.

Applicants are encouraged to dress with safety and weather conditions in mind. Long legged pants, long sleeved shirts, and work boots are recommended. All equipment and arborist testing will be conducted outside as weather permits.
Lifeguard applicants will need to be prepared to enter the water on test day.

Passing scores are valid for one year. If it has been over a year since you have tested, you will need to retest. Prior scores are reviewed and when applicable they are transferred. If you receive an email to test then you do not have eligible scores to transfer.

Certain Equipment Operator performance scores can be transferred. Scores from EO Public Works Street Maintenance and Waste Water can be transferred to either position. There are differences in some equipment that will require you to test again. For scores that are eligible to transfer please refer to this chart.
