A property tax exemption is available for Colorado residents who, by Jan. 1 of the year you apply, are age 65 or older, and have owned and lived in your home (as your primary residence) for 10 consecutive years or more.
  • The Colorado legislature controls the amount of the exemption.
  • All residents approved for the exemption in 2020, or any prior year, should see a reduction in the property tax bill received in January, 2021.
  • You must apply by July 15 of the year in which you seek an exemption. Applications postmarked by July 15 are considered timely.
  • Exemptions are only allowed for the year in which you apply, not for prior years
