Denver Celebrates New Protected Bike Lanes Connecting the Sun Valley Neighborhood to Downtown

High Comfort Facility Completes Critical Gap in City’s Bike Network

DENVER – Today, Denver’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) is joining with community members on the City’s west side to celebrate new protected bike lanes that create a circulator route from the Sun Valley neighborhood to Downtown Denver and back. The new high comfort facility on West 13th Avenue spans from the Platte River Trail to Mariposa Street, connecting with another protected bike lane on West 14th Avenue that leads to the Cherry Creek Trail, the Golden Triangle neighborhood, downtown destinations and beyond.  The bike lanes use rubber curbs and bollards to separate people on bikes from people in cars, greatly expanding the places people can comfortably access by bike and providing a practical, safer way to get from the west side to east side of town.

The new 13th Avenue protected bike lane that DOTI is celebrating with the community today is funded by the voter approved Elevate Denver Bond program, which is investing $18 million toward bike lanes across the city.

The media is invited to attend!

Bike lanes provide a travel option that’s convenient, affordable, has health benefits, and helps ease congestion. These are all elements that are part of the community’s vision for a healthier and more vibrant Denver. The city is currently on track to install 125 miles of bike lanes over a 5-year period ending in December 2023. This project also highlights our commitment to safety and our Vision Zero initiative to eliminate fatal crashes.  Another $16.7 million is earmarked in the Elevate Denver Bond program for multimodal improvements on W. 13th Avenue west of the South Platte River for safer and more efficient pedestrian, bike, and vehicle safety in the Sun Valley neighborhood.
