Adopt a Pet

COVID-19 Response

Denver Animal Shelter adoptions are open though we are not permitting parties to self-tour through adoptable animals. Current adoptable animals are displayed online, and customers can select a maximum of two animals to visit at the shelter. To assist customers with adoptions, DAP is offering its Adoption Hold Program via telephone. Customers can call 720-337-1810 to place an adoption hold, prior to the animal becoming available for adoption. Visit our Lost Pets page to view animals available for holds. Adoption holds are a $20 and $15 (for 2nd hold) donation.

Please read the signage when arriving at the shelter and follow all social distancing markers. We respectfully request that anyone who is currently ill (or has any known risk factors related to the virus) not visit Denver Animal Shelter. A mask/face covering, and six-feet social distancing will be required.

Denver Animal Shelter has many wonderful animals available for adoption! View our online database of adoptable pets or stop by to see our animals in person. We constantly have new animals coming to the shelter. Keep in mind that adoptions occur frequently and we can not guarantee the availability of an animal listed online. The shelter's adoption package includes the adoption fee, spay or neuter cost, vaccinations, and a one-year pet license.

Our goal is the find the right pet for your family! Within 90 days of adoption, if your new pet is not working out, return to the shelter and exchange your pet for another furry friend. You will have 90 days from the exchange date to choose another pet.

Transfer Partners

To assist Denver Animal Shelter in the placement of homeless animals, we have several cooperative partnerships with Colorado rescues groups, humane societies, and shelters. These partners assist us by giving these transfer animals extra care prior to placing them up for adoption. Interested in joining our transfer partner network? Please email DAPTransfers@denvergov.org to get started!
