14th Avenue Bridge Over Cherry Creek
As part of the Elevate Denver Bond Program, which voters approved in 2017 to fund critical improvements to infrastructure, Denver’s Department of Transportation & Infrastructure (DOTI) will replace the 60-year-old bridge on West 14th Avenue between northbound and southbound Speer Boulevard to preserve and extend the life of the bridge.
DOTI will also make safety improvements for those who walk and bike over the bridge, which will include building new pedestrian ramps, wider sidewalks, and installing a raised bicycle track over the 14th Avenue Bridge. In addition, the traffic signals at the West 14th Avenue and NB/SB Speer Boulevard intersections will also be upgraded.
Beginning the evening of Sunday, September 27, West 14th Avenue will close to thru-traffic from Santa Fe Drive to northbound/southbound Speer Boulevard until February 2021. A section of the Cherry Creek Trail that runs underneath the West 14th Avenue Bridge will also close while work is underway. Detours will be in place for people in cars, on bikes, and on foot. Message boards will also be posted in advance, alerting commuters to expect delays.
The bridge is expected to reopen to thru-traffic in February 2021, weather permitting, with intersection improvements continuing through spring 2021. All work is weather dependent and subject to change. The public’s patience and cooperation during construction are greatly appreciated.
Thru-Vehicles will be detoured around the work zone through:
- Left turn from W 14th Ave to Santa Fe Drive
- Right turn from N Santa Fe Dr to W Colfax Ave
- Right turn from W Colfax Ave to N Delaware St
- Left turn from N Delaware St to W 14th Ave
Local Access will be maintained between Santa Fe Drive and Speer Boulevard.
