General Questions

What does Peak Academy do?

Denver Peak Academy is a process improvement team that trains and collaborates with government employees to improve the customer and employee experience. This is done through our Green Belt and Black Belt Trainings, Process Innovation Workshops, and our Peak Partnerships.

How/why/when did you get started?

We were created in 2011 by Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock. The Mayor placed in the team in the Department of Finance under the budget director. The program was designed to provide frontline employees with the tools to innovate and make data driven decisions.

Why is Peak in the budget office?

Peak Academy works with the frontline staff in each department to best utilize the tools and talent they already possess to continuously improve their processes without the need for additional funding. 

Is this Lean/Six-Sigma?

Denver Peak Academy is not purely Lean or Six-Sigma. We utilize elements of these training along with real government examples in order to train government employees to implement and track innovations related to their specific work processes.

How many people work for Peak and how much does it cost to run the program?

Fully staffed, Denver Peak Academy employs 8 full-time people. The cost of running the program is just under one million dollars.

How do you choose partnership agencies?

Agencies come to Denver Peak Academy and request our services. In most cases, the requestor is the agency’s executive director. Involvement with Denver Peak Academy is optional, but nearly every city agency has participated.

Training Questions

How do I sign up for training?

Green Belt:
Sign up for our Green Belt training on City U by searching “PEAK Greenbelt 2019” in the Instructor-Led Training (ILT) section. 

Black Belt:
To sign up for Black Belt training fill out our Black Belt Training Application.

Who can take our training classes?

Our trainings are open to City and County of Denver employees, government employees outside of CCD and employees of non-profit organizations.

How much does training cost?

Green Belt:

  • CCD Employees: Training is free
  • Non-CCD Employees: $250 per person

Black Belt:

  • CCD Employees: Training is free
  • DEN Employees: $2000
  • Non-CCD Employees: $2,500 

How frequently are training classes held?

Green Belt: Our citywide Green Belt Training occurs once a month.

Black Belt: Our week-long Black Belt Training occurs on the first full work week of every month.

How do I complete my Green or Black Belt?

To earn your certification:

  1. Attend Green Belt/Black Belt Training
  2. Implement your innovation and track using the Innovation Form
  3. Submit the completed form to your Peak Academy Liaison

Do you have to complete Green Belt before Black Belt?

No. While Green Belt is an excellent introduction to the process innovation tools we teach; it is not a requirement to complete Green Belt before taking Black Belt.

Am I certified? Can I get a certificate? What do I put on my resume for attending a Peak training?

At Peak Academy, you are certified when you:

  1. Attend and complete your training (Green Belt or Black Belt)
  2. Submit one complete innovation form(DOCX, 133KB) (DOC) to your Peak Academy liaison.
  3. Once submitted you will receive your green or black lanyard, signifying that you’re certified.

People who earn their Black Belt Certification will also receive a certificate signed by the Mayor.

Once you are officially certified, you can put on your resume: “Denver Peak Academy Process Improvement Green Belt/Black Belt Certified. 

Is there a "refresher" course?

We do not currently offer a refresher course.

However, if you would like to go over any of the tools and techniques again feel free to contact your Peak Liaison or email peakacademy@denvergov.org . You can also access the workbook, PowerPoints, and tool resource guide online.

Do you do training offsite?

Yes, please reach out to peakacademy@denvergov.org with your specific request. 

Can Peak come to my conference or run training for my organization or city?

Metrics Questions

How can we start tracking our own programs success?

You can use this Excel template(XLSX, 28KB) (XLSX) that you can to track innovations, training participants, and savings. 

How many innovations do I need to submit each year? (for performance reviews)

You need to submit one innovation for Peak certification. We recommend three submitted innovations for performance reviews. 

How does Peak Academy track savings?

When somebody submits an innovation form, we enter the metrics into our database Salesforce. We also use Microsoft PowerBI to visualize all of the data as a dashboard. The dashboard contains training and savings metrics.

How do you measure success/ROI for your program?

Peak Academy utilizes Microsoft Power BI to visualize metrics captured in our Salesforce database. These metrics include innovation savings, number of black belts and green belts trained, agencies involved, and personal training dashboards for members of the team.
