Chief Hosa Campground

Chief Hosa campground opened in 1918 as “America’s first motor-camping area.” The campground spans 58 acres within the 2,400 acres of Denver’s Genesee Mountain Park, which is home to a city-owned bison herd and provides a unique opportunity to view these animals in a natural habitat.

The nearby historic Chief Hosa Lodge is available for event rentals.

Campground Reservations
RV and Campground facilities are open May 1 through the third week of September each year. Reservations for the 2021 season open at 8:00 a.m. on February 10.

COVID-19 Operating Guidelines

Reservations and check-in:

  • Reservations can only be made online at  www.denvergov.org.  Online payment is strongly encouraged.  Cash payment at the campground can only be made with self-service envelopes.
  • Camping spaces will be limited to 17 RV sites and 17 tent sites (down from 24 of each type) to promote social distancing and limit the number of people in the campground.

Camping Amenities:

  • The bathroom and shower facility will be limited to four persons per side at any one time and masks will be required inside the facility.  The bathroom and shower facility will be cleaned twice daily.
  • The dish washing area will be limited to use by one site group at a time.
  • Lines for the shower, restrooms, and dish washing area must stay six feet apart.
  • If crowding in the campground occurs Park Rangers will make contacts to enforce social distancing requirements.
  • No fires are allowed in individual sites. The group fire ring will not be utilized.
  • Campers who do not abide by social distance requirements or other COVID-19 related requirements may have their camping permit revoked and be evicted from the campground.

Additional Requirements for Campers:

  • Camp sites are limited to a maximum of 6 people.  Don’t invite visitors to your campsite, even for a few minutes.  Gatherings of more than 6 people will be asked to leave and may result in loss of your camping privileges.
  • It is strongly recommended that you camp and recreate only with members of your own household.
  • Campers must practice physical distancing of 6 feet or more when in common areas – such as restrooms, showers and utility service areas.
  • Campers must wear a mask when in or waiting in line to enter shared buildings such as restrooms (except to shower).
  • Campers are strongly encouraged to wear a mask when outside of their camp site.
  • It is strongly recommended that you wash your hands or use hand sanitizer with an alcohol content above 60% after each time you touch shared objects such as water service valves, restroom facilities and similar equipment.
