Since the late 1800s, the historically Black Five Points neighborhood has been as resilient as it has iconic. In the days of hardline redlining, the Points thrived with ingenuity and music, with Black professionals finding ways to support Black business and Black artists drawing residents from across the city to experience what was then called the Harlem of the West. In the 20th century, urban renewal efforts, light rail and out-migration meant some tough years for the area, threatening the area’s cultural identity and inspiring efforts to preserve Five Points’ history and legacy. Our team spoke with residents, business owners and historians about where Five Points has been and where it’s going.
