Old Airport Neighborhood Gets a New Name

Following a public process led by the local neighborhood organization, residents of the northeast Denver area once home to the city’s old municipal airport have chosen “Central Park” as its new name. The airport—and subsequently, the neighborhood that replaced it—carried the name of Denver Mayor Benjamin F. Stapleton, a member of the Ku Klux Klan. The call for changing the name received renewed urgency during the recent protests for racial justice. Denver has no formal process for naming neighborhoods, but staff will be updating city maps and planning documents in the coming months to reflect the community’s choice.
