The final piece of the regulatory tools adopted by the city of Denver to implement the National Western Center Master Plan, the NWC's Design Standards and Guidelines have been officially approved and finalized.
The design standards and guidelines will work in tandem with the adopted zoning amendments. City staff will use the guidelines to ensure projects on the campus meet a level of design quality consistent with the vision established in the master plan. Final administrative approval of the design standards and guidelines followed a public hearing held December 11, 2019.
The strategy for zoning amendments for the National Western Center was intended to facilitate stakeholder feedback before draft text and map amendments were prepared.
Community Planning and Development is proposing zoning changes and design standards and guidelines by which projects in the National Western Center will be reviewed and permitted. The new regulations will be based on the National Western Center Master Plan (PDF), the Elyria and Swansea Neighborhoods Plan (PDF) and other adopted policies.
The zoning and design standards and guidelines are intended to bring to fruition the community vision reflected in the adopted plans for the National Western Center campus. The text amendments to the Denver Zoning Code are expected to go through the legislative process, which culminates in a City Council public hearing, in the summer of 2019. The design standards and guidelines will be approved by the Denver Planning Board.
