Pets for Life

Building relationships, saving lives

Pets for Life is a program developed by The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) that uses innovative outreach strategies to extend animal services, resources and information to an underserved community. By addressing the need for accessible pet care, Pets for Life (PFL) helps animals by partnering with and empowering the families who care for them. In 2016, Denver Animal Protection was chosen to be a PFL mentorship city by HSUS. We are proud to be a part this program that partners with the community to help keep animals happy and healthy in their homes.

Denver Animal Protection delivers the PFL program locally to build humane communities using innovative strategies and fresh approaches designed to extend the reach of animal services, resources and information to underserved areas. PFL serves people and animals in Denver’s 80219 and 80204 zip codes through proactive door-to-door outreach, community events and a consistent presence in the neighborhood. Families in these communities face many barriers to accessing important services for the animals they love, and 84 percent of these animals have never seen a veterinarian. This approach allows us to reach those in our community who have the least access to information and services, improving quality of life for both animals and people. DAP, in collaboration with our partners Dumb Friends League and PetAid, provides free spay/neuter surgery, vaccines, information and resources.

The program seeks to meet community members where they are, rather than waiting for them to come to us. Here’s what you need to know about Pets for Life:

  • Since its launch, PFL has helped to spay/neuter more than 600 animals in the 80219 and 80204 zip codes for free!
  • PFL takes a nonjudgmental, supportive approach to helping animals by working directly with people in underserved communities — PFL is not an enforcement program.
  • PFL also provides free collars, leashes, vaccinations, educational resources and more!
