Protesting your Property Value for the 2020 Tax Year

Current options for protesting your property value:

2020 Tax Year - The statutory window to appeal to the Assessor for 2020 is May 1 to June 1. A prior year appeal can be filed for 2019 begining January 2, 2020.

Prior Year Appeals

2018 and 2019 Tax Years: an abatement petition may be filed for 2018 and 2019 at this time; the petition for 2018 must be filed no later than January 2, 2021.

Frequently Asked Questions

A protest is an opportunity to demonstrate to the appraisal staff in the Assessor’s Office that your property’s assigned value or classification is inaccurate.  Your protest should provide evidence to support your position. 

Reasons to appeal include:
  • Incorrect property characteristics – property square footage, condition, bath count, use, etc.
  • Estimated value is too high – provide market data to support a reduction in value.
  • Incorrect property classification – the assessor is required to classify property based on the actual use as of Jan 1st of every year. 

After a protest is submitted, it is assigned to a member of the appraisal staff who will review the information presented and make a determination.  A determination can either be to adjust the assigned value/classification, or deny the appeal and retain the current assigned value.  The Assessor will notify you of the determination.
