DHS Kicks Off 9th Annual Adopt-a-Student School Supply Drive

2019 drive seeks donations by July 31 to support Denver students

Purchasing school supplies has long been a rite of summer for children and families everywhere – creating excitement about the new school year and setting the stage for success in the classroom. Yet for many Denver children, school supplies are an expense their families can’t afford, leaving these students without the basic tools they need to succeed.

To help meet this need in our community, Denver Human Services (DHS) is seeking donors to participate in its annual Adopt-a-Student School Supply Drive, supporting their GIVE Denver program. The drive runs through July 31 and hopes to provide 1,800 Denver students with backpacks full of supplies, including 500 students currently served by DHS programs, so they start the school year on the right track.

“Ensuring that all Denver students have access to the school supplies they need to hit the ground running when the school year begins is paramount to reaching our goals for an equitable community,” said DHS Executive Director Don Mares. “We’re investing in Denver’s future leaders, so it’s doubly important that we give them every opportunity to succeed in school and life.”

Now in its ninth year, the Adopt-a-Student School Supply Drive pairs generous donors with children served by DHS and nominated by DHS staff. These students receive a backpack filled with school supplies picked out just for them. DHS also provides backpacks full of general, grade-level supplies to other students in the community at its annual #BeSupported Family Resource Fair (this year on August 10 at the Richard T. Castro Human Services Center), and throughout the year when students are in need.

Last year, donors provided backpacks to 544 students served by DHS and another 750 to students in the Denver community at the #BeSupported fair. More than 500 additional backpacks were provided to students in the community in the following months. This year, DHS hopes to provide backpacks to at least 1,800 Denver students total, including matching donors to at least 500 students served by DHS programs.

Donors can participate in the Adopt-a-Student School Supply Drive in three ways:

  1. “Adopt” a student: sign up online to sponsor one or more specific student(s) and GIVE Denver will email a school supply list for that child. Consider teaming up with colleagues, friends or family members to adopt a student together. Register by July 31 here.

  2. Donate school supplies: help DHS reach its goal by dropping off filled backpacks (or general school supplies) to the GIVE Center (1200 Federal Blvd.) on specific donation drop-off days listed online at here, or at one of the donations bins located throughout the community. Download this year’s school supply list here.

  3. Make a monetary donation: DHS staff will use monetary donations to shop for school supplies for children not matched with a donor. Send a check payable to Denver Human Services or make payments online here.

Donors are encouraged to register by July 31 to allow the GIVE Denver team of DHS time to distribute the supplies in advance of the start of the school year. Donors may drop off or mail donations to Denver Human Services c/o GIVE Denver, 1200 Federal Blvd. Denver, CO 80204. All donations are 100% tax deductible.
