City Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Preparedness Update

Currently, the Denver Department of Public Health & Environment is coordinating with other local public health agencies, Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment (CDPHE), and the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) to ensure accurate information is provided to the public, healthcare and other service providers, Denver International Airport staff, and regulated industries. We are relying on plans already in place for identifying, responding to, and isolating possible Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases within Denver to reduce our risk of a local outbreak.

Denver’s dining scene is red hot. But, are local restaurant inspectors seeing red when they make their rounds?

Not in establishments designated as “Partners in Food Safety,” a program designed to recognize Denver food facilities that consistently promote and maintain excellent food safety practices.

The bar is high. Of the more than 3,500 regulated retail food establishments in Denver, only 15% typically qualify for the Partners in Food Safety Award.

“Food establishments” include restaurants, food trucks, bakeries, convenience stores, and food vendors and cafeterias in facilities such as schools and airports. The criteria to become eligible for the program are rigorous and include the following:

  • No more than two critical violations per inspection on the last two inspections
  • No fines issued within the last 12 months
  • No foodborne illness outbreaks within the last 12 months
  • Must offer a formal training program for all food handling employees

Dining out is a treat. An opportunity to enjoy a variety of food prepared in all kinds of ways; there’s something for everyone in Denver’s dining scene. But just as important as the buzz is food safety. Each year, one in six Americans, or 48 million people, will experience sickness from a foodborne outbreak.  Be aware, educated and informed before you make that reservation!
