Denver Sheriff Department Task Forces Release Draft Recommendations

DENVER – Denver officials today released 40 draft recommendations for reform from several task forces convened earlier this year to review policies, procedures, discipline, training and staff well-being within the Denver Sheriff Department. See draft recommendations attached.

The draft recommendations will be refined before a final report is submitted to Safety Department Executive Director Stephanie Y. O’Malley, as well as a third-party oversight firm, by the end of September.

Roughly 50 law enforcement leaders, community members and others are serving on the task forces, which began their work in April as part of a top-to-bottom examination of the Sheriff Department ordered by Mayor Michael B. Hancock.

“The training task force has made great strides to take a very thoughtful, very honest approach to reviewing the effectiveness of how Denver trains its sheriffs. I’m honored to be part of such great work as this is important to the future of this department,” said Pete Dunbar, Director of the Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training.

“I am encouraged by the work I have seen within these task forces and pleased that Mayor Hancock’s commitment to move forward on this challenging reform effort is making progress. There is a long road ahead to enact reform, but I believe if they continue to respect the diverging perspectives of so many voices and take meaningful action, change will occur,” said Dr. Joe Sandoval, Criminal Justice professor, Metropolitan State University of Denver.

“The dedicated, hard work of these task forces is delivering recommendations that will help lead the department in the right direction. The discipline task form continues to take input from the community and the department and looks forward to informing the process as it moves forward,” said Al LaCabe, former Denver Manager of Safety.
