Police Chief Search Committee Selects Five Candidates to Interview

DENVER – Executive Director of Public Safety Troy Riggs today announced that the committee Mayor Michael B. Hancock appointed to recommend candidates for Denver’s next Police Chief will interview five of the 22 officers who applied for the position.

The five candidates are:

  • Commander Michael Calo
  • Commander Joseph Montoya
  • Commander Paul Pazen
  • Deputy Chief David Quinones
  • Commander Ronald Saunier

“The committee met for six hours yesterday and had a robust discussion to identify the candidates with the interpersonal skills and personal characteristics they believe will be a good fit for Denver,” Executive Director Riggs said. “They decided to interview five strong candidates who represent the talent that exists within the Denver Police Department.”

Before voting on which candidates to invite in for an interview, committee members reviewed input from five community meetings hosted by the city, feedback provided by officers, and emails submitted by community members and internal stakeholders. Committee members also shared their individual insights as community leaders appointed by the Mayor to support diversity of thought in the search process. Although he was appointed to chair the committee, Executive Director Riggs was not a voting member.

Following the interviews the committee will recommend an unspecified number of candidates to Mayor Hancock for his consideration. The Police Chief is an appointed position and the Mayor will decide who will lead the police department and serve the City & County of Denver.

Mayor Hancock announced the application process for the Police Chief appointment on May 10.

Current or retired members of the Denver Police Department who have held a rank of Lieutenant or higher for at least five years were advanced to the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF), a non-profit with more than 30 years of expertise in recruiting and identifying well-qualified candidates for the position.
