Denver's YOUTH ADVOCATING for Denver's youth.

 

The Mayor's Youth Commission provides youth the opportunity to develop leadership skills and advise the director of the Office of Children's Affairs on issues impacting youth, ages 12 - 18, living in the City and County of Denver. Youth commissioners work together with adult commissioners to make recommendations in the areas of:

  • Developing procedures and processes
  • Accessing and participating in citywide programs
  • Ensuring equal rights and opportunities through legislation or administrative action
  • Establishing goals and action plans

APPLICATION DEADLINE EXTENDED TO MARCH 10!

Commissioners have already been accepted for the 2016-2017 school year.
Applications for the 2017-2018 school year will be accepted January 1 - March 10, 2017. Youth commissioners must live in Denver or attend a Denver Public School (9th - 12th grade). Selected commissioners will attend "evening" meetings the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month during the school year.

Mayor's Youth Commission meetings are scheduled during the school year. Please check back for agendas and minutes when the 2016-2017 school year is under way.

The Mayor's Youth Commission consistently identifies opportunities to help create solutions, engage with intiatives and participate in events geared to improve the lives of Denver youth. Commissioners have been actively involved in the following:

Red Alert Team
The Mayor's Youth Commission established this team to collect donated items to create feminine hygiene packets for homeless females. This group continues to work on this effort, so look for more opportunities to donate or help out in the  future.

Think Like a Genius® Foundation Challenge
During the summer, organizations are invited to assemble teams of young people between the ages of 14 and 19 to address pressing community issues in Denver. Qualifying teams will be given stipends. The top three teams that develop the most creative, effective solutions over a seven-week period are awarded monetary prizes!
