Jerry directs the work of the Office of Sustainability in helping City agencies plan, finance and implement the initiatives that will allow the City to achieve its 2020 Sustainability Goals. He works with agencies throughout the city government as well as with numerous outside stakeholders to take full advantage of the creativity and commitment of all partners in the City’s sustainability work. Jerry also serves as the principal spokesperson for the Office of Sustainability and does numerous presentations each year about Denver’s sustainability efforts for groups both inside and outside of Denver.
Jerry has been working on issues of sustainability as a volunteer and professional since he was a teenager in the 70’s. He went to college and law school at George Washington University, and worked on Capitol Hill while there. He’s been a commercial trial attorney, national officer of both the Sierra Club and the National Audubon Society, and one of the Sierra Club’s “Environmental Heroes.” Jerry, his wife Sharon and their grown sons Sam and Jeremy love the outdoors and spend free time cycling, hiking and birding.
Sonrisa assists city agencies in designing strategies and projects that the City can incorporate to help achieve its 2020 Sustainability Goals. She assists city agencies and the Office of Sustainability with fundraising efforts, including providing assistance in grant writing, to advance sustainability projects. Sonrisa also conducts and directs research to identify projects and best practices used in other cities that could be adapted by City agencies to help achieve the 2020 Goals. She participates in city projects to ensure that sustainability is incorporated into the process, design, and execution.
Sonrisa designed her own degree in Environmental Systems Engineering which combined Energy Engineering, Economics, and Policy in the School of Engineering at Stanford University. She played rugby for seven years at Stanford and upon returning home to Denver. She loves spending time in nature, having grown up camping, fishing and hiking in the mountains of Colorado. Sonrisa loves to travel and experience nature and cultures in other countries around the world.
Jessica coordinates the work of the Office of Sustainability. She manages scheduling and accounting for the Office and also handles outreach and communications. Jessica schedules and conducts neighborhood meetings across Denver to catalyze collaboration among the City and its residents as we work together to achieve our 2020 Sustainability Goals.
Jessica earned a B.A. from the University of Missouri, an M.S. from Colorado State University's Warner College of Natural Resources, and has a background in climate change education, mitigation, and adaptation. She is particularly interested in community-based social marketing, social and environmental justice, conflict resolution, and community resiliency. Jessica enjoys hiking, camping, cat videos, and ice cream.
