DENVER – Thursday, September 5, 2019 – On Sunday, September 1, 2019, at 8:40 a.m., Erie Police officers were called to the area south of the I-25 Frontage Road and Erie Parkway on a report of a person on the side of the road who was covered with bags. Upon inspection, it was determined the individual was a deceased adult male who had been fatally shot. Detectives from the Erie Police Department responded and processed the scene as a homicide. The detectives immediately recognized the location of the victim’s body was not the location where the victim was killed.
During the next two days, Erie Police detectives actively investigated the victim’s death, following all available leads. Through their investigation, the detectives determined the victim was likely killed in the 5200 block of Steele St. in Denver before being transported to Erie.
Upon discovering the connection of the victim’s death to Denver, Erie Police detectives began coordinating with the Denver Police Department Homicide Unit. Based upon the incident occurring in the City and County of Denver, the Denver Police Department requested to assume the responsibility of completing the criminal investigation of this incident. Denver Police investigators continue to interview witnesses and are actively following leads as they work to understand the nature of the incident that led to the victim’s death and identify the individual(s) responsible.
An autopsy was completed by the Weld County Coroner’s Office and the victim was identified as Gene David Cisneros (DOB: 12/17/1979).
