DENVER – Wednesday, September 23, 2020 – With the days becoming shorter and sun glare more prevalent during peak commuting hours, the Denver Police Department reminds drivers how best to combat visibility issues caused by sun rays.

When investigating crashes, Denver Police Traffic Investigators identify several contributing factors that lead to crashes. Between January of 2015 and September of 2020, sun glare was a contributing factor is 590 crashes. Therefore, in order to ensure everyone’s safety on the roadways, DPD offers the following tips:

  • Wear sunglasses when driving in the daytime – polarized lenses are recommended
  • Ensure your windshield is clean and free of cracks and pits
  • Lower your sun visor to block the sun
  • Drive the speed limit, slowing down if needed, and pay extra attention to traffic signals
  • Alter your drive time and/or route, if you can, to avoid driving at times and in directions when the sun is in your eyes. Also, if the sun’s glare becomes too much and blocks visibility, safely pullover to allow the sun’s position to change.
