The Denver Sheriff Department calculated the 2019 Jail Population Summary utilizing the guidance provided by the United States Department of Justice National Institute of Corrections (NIC).
The NIC Formula for Calculating Average Daily Population:
The average daily population for a given year is the number of admissions in that year multiplied by the annual average length of stay, divided by 365 (days in a year) - (ADM x ALOS)/365 = ADP
The NIC Formula for Calculating Average Length of Stay:
The average length of stay (in days) for a given year equals the annual average daily population multiplied by 365, divided by the total number of admissions in that year - (ADP x 365)/ADM = ALOS
Note: 365 is used at the completion of the year. If the year has not come to an end, use the day count for the day in which the formula is used.
