Denver County Jail

Chief Connie Coyle

Division Chief Connie Coyle is in charge of the County Jail Division. The County Jail Division is responsible for the long term care and custody of sentenced prisoners, sentenced and pre-sentenced female prisoners and prisoners sentenced to alternative sentencing programs. The Denver County Jail has been in existence since 1956 and offers a variety of programs aimed at enhancing the lives of prisoners while incarcerated.  Prisoners have access to health care 24 hours a day under the guidance of the Denver Health Medical Center and health care provided to the prisoners is accredited by the National Commission on Correctional Health Care(NCCHC). There are varying conditions of confinement ranging from minimum security dormitory housing, maximum security cell blocks to special management "lock-down" areas. Housing within the facility is determined by the Classification Unit.

Van Cise-Simonet Detention Center

Chief Venessie Brown

Division Chief Venessie Brown is in charge of the Downtown Division which includes Court Services and the Civil Process UnitThe Van Cise-Simonet Detention Center is the prisoner intake center for the City and County of Denver.  Prisoners are processed into the system, booked, fingerprinted, and temporarily housed until such a time that they are able to make bond, or have been given an advisement by the court.  Depending on the outcome of their court appearance, prisoners are either released from the Van Cise-Simonet Detention Center or sent to the Denver County Jail to serve out their sentence. Meals, phone calls, programs, video visitation and showers are all done within the housing unit.

Other Facilities

The mission of the Denver Sheriff Department Civil Unit is to provide quality customer service in the processing and execution of civil process. The duties of the Civil Unit are widely varied. They include, but are not limited to:

Denver Health is a comprehensive, integrated organization providing level one care for all, regardless of ability to pay. Twenty-five percent of all Denver residents, or approximately 150,000 individuals, receive their health care at Denver Health. One in three children in Denver is cared for by Denver Health physicians as well.

The Lindsey-Flanigan Courthouse, located at 400 West Colfax Avenue across from the Van Cise-Simonet Detention Center, is a five story, 310,000 square foot building that houses 29 courtrooms. 

It provides space for District Attorney, City Attorney, Clerks of Court, Public Defender, Probation Offices, Jury Assembly, Jury Commissioner and temporary inmate holding for both adults and juveniles. The courthouse is also connected to the Van Cise-Simonet Detention Center via an underground tunnel designed for the transport of inmates between the detention center and courthouse.

The Training Academy's primary function is to plan, develop, coordinate and execute training programs for Denver Sheriff Department employees and, at times other agencies. Services provided include DSD academy training, support services headquarters, professional services & accreditation, internal affairs, finance and technology management.
