The City and County of Denver has been recognized for its commitment to providing a secure 2016 election, taking home first place in the City Government category of the Cybersecurity Leadership and Innovation Awards. In its 17th year, this award recognizes the commitment of state and local governments, as well as educational organizations, towards keeping confidential data secure, despite evolving threats.

The City and County of Denver has been recognized for the ways in which it connects with residents in the digital space, taking home first place in Overall City Government Experience. In its inaugural year, the Center for Digital Government’s 2017 Government Experience awards recognize the achievements and best practices of states, cities, and counties that have gone to the web and beyond to radically improve the experience of government and push the boundaries of how citizen services are delivered.

Last month, a team of Tech Services staff donated their time to install and network 30 newly-refurbished computers for the Denver Children’s Home. In addition to the installation of this equipment, which was generously donated by GroundFloor Media’s Get Grounded Foundation, a second group of TS employees also spent hours diagnosing connectivity issues, installing new cabling, and both simplifying and improving the DCH Wi-Fi.

The North Denver Cornerstone Collaborative (NDCC), Denver Smart City, the University of Denver, The GrowHaus, and PCs for People partnered this past month for the Smart City Photovoice Project in North Denver. The project engaged 13 teenagers from the Elyria and Swansea neighborhoods to have their voice heard through photography. The participants artistic work will be exhibited at The GrowHaus on Thursday, August 3 from 5-6:30 p.m.

In the 2016 election, the City and County of Denver advanced from simply fending for itself to participating in a highly collaborative effort to coordinate cyber defenses at the city, county, state, and federal levels. 2016 marked the first time the city’s technology and cybersecurity organizations and the Colorado Secretary of State worked together to share network traffic information, jointly utilizing tools provided by the Colorado Division of Homeland Security. This strong intergovernmental collaboration, alongside the pre-election validation of equipment and day-of monitoring, ensured voter confidence in elections remained intact.
