The Great Denver Cleanup

Amid COVID-19 and the need to social distance, the Great Denver Cleanup will not take place on June 27th, 2020 to help residents and staff stay safe.

We are evaluating options to host this event later in the season, so please check back for additional details in the weeks ahead.

2020 Great Denver Cleanup:

Got some old mattresses or box springs? Got a pile of cardboard you want to get rid of? Got a bunch of scrap metal? Got a load of large plastic items you don’t want?

Recycle it for free at the GDC!

Got a pile of yard debris, branches and organic material?

Compost it for free at the GDC!


The following items are accepted at this one-day event, but must be sorted by type and kept separate from trash to ensure that they can be properly recycled or composted:

  • Yard Debris – Includes clean material such as brush, branches, grass, and leaves (no plastic bags)
  • Large Rigid Plastics- Includes items such as laundry baskets, large toys (no metal or wheels), play centers, kid pools, plastic lawn furniture, 5-gallon buckets (remove handle) and old plastic storage tubs. Please no coolers. (Note: Large rigid plastics are not accepted in your Denver Recycles purple cart, only at this event. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to recycle your large rigid plastics free of charge).
  • Appliances – Includes items such as water heaters, dishwashers, microwaves, refrigerators.
  • Furniture, Box springs, and Mattresses – These items are accepted in any condition.
  • Overflow Cardboard – Cardboard must be flattened. (Note: Flattened cardboard is always accepted in Denver Recycles’ purple carts and at the Cherry Creek Recycling Drop-off).
  • Scrap Metal – please visit or call 311 for accepted types of scrap metal
  • Block Styrofoam (No takeout containers or cups)


  • NO electronics – no TV’s, no computers, etc.
  • NO batteries or light bulbs
  • NO household hazardous waste - paint, chemicals, liquids etc.
  • NO building, construction/demolition, or commercial landscaper materials (lumber, concrete, stone, or rocks are not accepted)
  • NO tires (these will not be accepted at this event, but please bring tires to our annual tire collection event in the Fall)
