Compared to motorists, bicyclists are 6.5 times more likely to die in a traffic crash in Denver. Together with pedestrians, bicyclists represent an unacceptably large portion of traffic deaths.

May is National Bike Month, so it's a perfect time to focus on how we can improve safety for bicyclists in Denver. The Vision Zero Action Plan includes a number of efforts to rethink the way we design our streets with bicyclists and pedestrians in mind, including:

  • Building an enhanced bikeway network (20–25 miles per year) and the amenities that support it (bicycle detection, parking).
  • Expanding bicycle and pedestrian education programs for staff, students, and families.
  • Creating multimodal street design guidelines that incorporate safe, high-ease-of-use bicycle facilities.
