Denver Office of Economic Development Releases New Funding Reports

The Denver Office of Economic Development (OED) today announced the release of two new resources to assist Denver businesses. OED issued the Denver Venture Capital Report – 2013 as well as an updated, second edition of the Denver Capital Matrix. The publications were announced at the OED Capital Roundtable, a private meeting with local business and funding leaders.

“Small business is the driving force of Denver’s ideas economy and culture of innovation,” said Paul Washington, OED executive director. “Through the leadership of the Hancock administration, the city is producing resources to help grow this important sector. The Denver Venture Capital Report and the Capital Matrix are just two examples of first-ever, nationally innovative resources coming out of the OED.”

The
Denver Venture Capital Report – 2013 highlights venture capital investment in metro Denver from 2008 to 2012. Authored by Regis University School of Management graduate students under the supervision of Dr. Luka Powanga, the report was commissioned by OED in conjunction with Innovation Pavilion. The study utilizes data from PricewaterhouseCoopers/National Venture Capital Association MoneyTreeTM reports and CBInsights.

The 20-page report shows that venture capital investment in metro Denver firms has slightly improved over the past two years, with investments averaging $125 million per quarter. Additionally, the combined metro Denver and Boulder-Longmont region ranked fifth among selected areas in the U.S. in venture capital deal volume and investment levels.

The
Denver Capital Matrix identifies approximately 400 funding sources, including traditional bank lending, venture capital firms, private equity firms, angel investors, mezzanine sources and others that have funded Colorado businesses. The matrix provides contact information and categorizes the investment focus of each listed organization. The new update includes more than 70 new institutional investors that have funded area businesses during the past year.

Data sources for the
Denver Capital Matrix include the National Venture Capital Association, S&P Capital IQ and the Colorado Bankers Association.

Both the
Denver Capital Matrix and the Denver Venture Capital Report – 2013  are available online at www.denvergov.org/oed.
